About John Arthur Cumming - Ship's Master of Aberdeen
Please sign in to see more. John Arthur Cumming (I) was born in Elgin, Moray in 1805 and went to sea as an apprentice aged 13. He married Elizabeth Scott in Aberdeen in 1828, gained his master's certificate in 1851 and died at sea with one of his sons in 1856.
The eldest of John and Elizabeth's three sons was Robert Scott Cumming, who started work as a 'card comb worker' and went on to become Managing Partner at the Devanha Brewery, the largest in Aberdeen. Robert had a large family by his first wife Isabella Shand: he can be seen with his second wife, seven of his children, their spouses and six of his grand children in the photograph (1897) which forms the cover of the 'Photo Album' on this website.
John Arthur Cumming (I) currently has nearly 140 known direct descendants who, together with their spouses, are the individuals shown in this website. The website is password protected and has been established to share information among this branch of the Cumming clan only, and to stimulate interest in continuing research into our ancestors.
